Justin took over the winemaking at Coyote Canyon Winery in September 2013 just as harvest was kicking off. His first Big John Cab continued the quality standards set for all the H/H Estates Reserve wines. It got 2 double golds and a gold in early competitions, but the real fun was receiving a 93 pt gold medal in the Seattle Wine Awards 2023 Diamond of the Decade wine competition! The H/H Estate Reserve wines entered in the Diamond of the Decade competition have proven their age worthiness by nearly everyone receiving a gold medal. The 2014 Big John Cab appears to have received the highest score in the 2024 Seattle Wine Awards Diamond of the Decade with 96 pts. Justin has bottled 10 Big John Vintages now, 5 have received gold medals and 2 have earned platinum in the Great Northwest Wine platinum award competition.
I previously mentioned that 100% of the Cabernet grapes before the 2018 vintage came from the same 03 block. Above is a photo of Justin standing in the 03 block. Since 2018, Justin has been able to get additional grapes from several other top Coyote Canyon vineyard blocks.
We are currently selling the 2019 vintage which earned 94 pt gold in the Seattle Wine Awards competition. Justin’s tasting notes for the 2019 are: Great dark ruby red color. Sweet oak tones mix with black cherry and toast. The flavors are dark red fruits, light toast, bitter chocolate with a long finish. Drink now until 2037.
