In 2007, we made our first Cabernet to sell as a varietal. We created 2 wines the Reserve (pictured above) and Coyote Canyon label. In the beginning, I liked the bigger wines made with more American Oak and chose that for our 1st Big John Cab.

Where did I get the name Big John Cab? The year I graduated from WSU, 1973, the American Hereford Association went around the US looking for the best Hereford bulls, that were herd sire prospects for John Ascuaga’s herd bull sale at the Golden Nugget in Reno Nevada. Our bull was selected to participate and topped the sale in 1974 selling for $23,000.

A lot of bull was associated with the name John that day. The bull was named after the buyer of the bull, John Beckman, from Eureka, CA, who purchased ¾ interest for $23,000. John Ascuaga, who owned the Golden nugget Casino, and not to forget, Jimmy Dean, who sang the song Big John on the same stag. Big John was sold the next day.

Like Big John the bull, every Big John Cab has been a winner from our first vintage in 2007 to our 2022, which we will be bottling in a few days. Watch this month as I share more information on Big John and remember we are selling 2019 Big John for the month of August with a 10% discount.
